Let's Pretend We're in Antarctica


I am Ilyana. I’m eighteen and I have these conversations in my head. Sometimes, they can be relatively disturbing – enough to slit one’s wrists if they are suffering from a real, psychological illness. However, I only pretend to have social anxiety disorder to excuse the miserable truth of my introversion. Sometimes, these conversations are pretty intense in a positive way – like a Eureka moment, but I’ve never really liked that word Eureka so I’m not sure what else to call it. I hate cats. I’m a dog-person, but even then, I’m not particularly fond of pets. I like animals though. I am the offspring of a cookie-cutter couple, living in suburban paradise. Contrary to popular belief, I don’t listen to black men rapping incoherently about hoes and bitches. I’d like to think of myself as a trailer park hipster. I know some things, but I can’t be with the best of them. I’m cool enough to be your Facebook friend, but not cool enough for real life coffee dates and midnight liquor runs. I like to photograph things and people because it gives me a sense of detachment while still being in the midst of things happening, lives changing, and other noun+verb combinations. I go through phases and all this talk about myself may turn obsolete tomorrow.
